Specialist to discuss irregular heartbeats
If the heart seems to speed up or slow down every now and then, or these episodes leave individuals lightheaded, they could be experiencing atrial fibrillation, or A-Fib. People who have A-Fib, or an irregular heartbeat, could be five to seven times more likely to have a stroke.

There is an opportunity to learn about the condition at a free seminar from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Gardens of Gladewater Community Building, 108 Lee St. in Gladewater.
Dr. Sam K. Daya, an invasive cardiologist at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler, will explain how A-Fib is diagnosed, treated, and controlled. He will discuss how untreated it weakens your heart and causes blood clots that can lead to heart failure and stroke.

The seminar is sponsored by UT Physicians of Gladewater, a physician practice associated with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.

The seminar is free but seating is limited. For reservations, call 903-877-7147.

It's Cervical health Awareness Month
During this month, the Northeast Texas Public Health District, or NET Health, are working to help women learn the importance of early detection and prevention of HPV and cervical cancer.

Women of all ages can decrease the likelihood of cervical cancer by getting regular screenings. The pap test can find cervical pre-cancers at early, treatable stages. Lessening chances of contracting an HPV infection includes getting the HPV vaccine.

“Cervical cancer is the most preventable cancer for women,” said Dr. Jonathan MacClements, Smith County Health Authority. “The best way to lower a woman’s risk of cervical cancer is to get a pap test regularly and speak to their doctor about the HPV test or vaccine.”

According to the state data the highest incidence rates of cervical cancer are found primarily along the Texas-Mexico border and in regions of East Texas.

“Through a partnership with UT Health Science Center Tyler, NET Health refers women for cervical screenings and diagnostics at no charge,” said Stephanie Taylor, director of community outreach and assistance at NET Health. “The program covers women who are uninsured or underinsured and who meet income guidelines, through a program funded by DSHS. It’s the start of a new year and to start the year right, we encourage women in East Texas to have their regular pap tests and to be aware that assistance is available.”
