Van Zandt County authorities investigate house fire
Staff Reports

Authorities on Friday were investigating a structure fire in Van Zandt County.

About 10 a.m. that day, the Van Zandt County Fire Marshal along with Fruitvale, Grand Saline, Edgewood and South Van Zandt fire departments were dispatched to the 11000 block of U.S. Highway 80 in Fruitvale on a reported structure fire, according to a news release.

The release states that when authorities arrive on scene, they found a single-story brick home with fire coming through the roof. The homeowner was found outside and was well.

The homeowner, identified as Lewis Harris, was home at the time of the fire and was able to get himself and his dogs out, according to a news release.

However, the house was a total loss, and Lewis, who lived alone, lost everything he had, according to a news release. Lewis did have insurance and was assisted by the American Red Cross. He was able to borrow clothes from a neighbor.

According to a news release, the cause of the fire appears to be accidental but is still under investigation by the fire marshal. Van Zandt County Precinct 3 and Precinct 1 constables were on scene along with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, who assisted with traffic control. The fire was brought under control about 11:30 a.m.
