Proud new mother Melva Redic got a special New Year’s surprise early on Tuesday morning at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital — her first child, a son named Mikah Jordae Nelson, whose original due date was Jan. 9.

“I came in to be induced, but during the contractions, the baby’s heart rate slowed down, and they had to do an emergency caesarian section,” Ms. Redic, 31, said as she cuddled her 6-pound, 6-ounce son in her hospital room. She said she has lived in Tyler for 14 years.

Ms. Redic, who was surrounded by family, said she is very excited to be a mom, and considers it to be a blessing.

“I have always wanted to be a mom,” she said, adding that she has several nieces and nephews.

The new mother, who said she and her new baby were healthy, hoped to be able leave the hospital soon.

Several mothers were in labor at East Texas Medical Center on Tuesday, but it was not known if they would deliver their babies on Tuesday, ETMC Spokeswoman Rebecca Berkley said in a statement.
