Giving to others way to shine your light

The Tyler newspaper today launches its annual “Shine Your Light” campaign that encourages us to donate money to help charitable organizations.

This year the money raised will be split among the Samaritan Counseling Center of Tyler, Bethesda Clinic, The Hospice of East Texas, Alzheimer’s Alliance of Smith County, PATH, East Texas Crisis Center, The Salvation Army of Tyler, East Texas Food Bank and Meals On Wheels.

All of these nonprofit agencies meet either basic (food, shelter and clothing) or special (counseling and comfort) needs of people experience some form of trial and tribulation. They offer hope to those who are struggling with hopelessness. They are a source of strength to those who are feeling weak.

They all do amazing things — often with little public attention or fanfare.

The goal of “Shine Your Light” is not only to raise money for these nonprofit agencies (because they need money in order to help others) but also to raise awareness about what they do.

Over the next days, our writers, photographers and editors will bring you stories about each agency. Take time to learn about their respective missions. Read the stories of people who have benefited from their work and caring staffs.

One of the ways we at the Tyler Morning Telegraph shine our light is by drawing attention to individuals and groups that do good things in our community.

By exposing the good work of these agencies, it is our hope that this annual campaign will inspire you to find ways to shine your light. Each of these agencies provides opportunities for all of us to shine.

Let your light shine before men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 5:16
