Bond election and superintendent on front burner

Tyler ISD trustees will discuss a future bond election and review resumes for the superintendent position during a Monday board workshop.
Board vice president the Rev. Orenthia Mason said trustees will discuss the amount of the bond proposal as well as specific projects that could or should be included.
The district has been eyeing a May bond election, but has until February to call it.
Board President Michelle Carr said they want to get the proposal as close to final as possible so that residents will be able to respond with their thoughts about it.
She said trustees are trying to listen to residents and continue evaluating the needs district-wide.
Rev. Mason said most board members agree they will not call for a bond proposal that would raise taxes.
District officials previously have said TISD could fund a bond package up to $160 million without raising the tax rate, which is $1.375 per $100 valuation.
This is because TISD is paying off more than or equal to the amount of debt it would take on up to that amount.
The Rev. Mason said the board wants to hear from residents regarding what they would like to see included in a bond package.
People can email board members from the district website or address the board during meetings when a time for public comment is scheduled.
In executive session, which is closed to the public, trustees will look at resumes submitted for the superintendent post.
At that time, they will decide if they are going to interview any of the applicants in person or by phone, Rev. Mason said.

The district did post a notice for a special board meeting to be held at noon Wednesday in which a lone finalist for the superintendent position could be named.
When a lone finalist is named, the district must wait the required 21 days before hiring the person.
TISD has been without a superintendent since August when Dr. Randy Reid left for Keller ISD.
Gary Mooring took over as interim superintendent and is one of five people who had applied for the permanent position as of Friday afternoon, according to district officials. The district accepted resumes through Saturday.
Trustees gave high praise to Mooring at a November board meeting, saying he is engaged in the community, offers stability and maturity and has experience networking with higher education institutions, among other qualities.
That being said, school district attorney John Hardy said at the time that all applications would be considered.
In other business, the board will discuss the sale of the old Jones Elementary School.
Board members decided in September to move forward with the sale of the old campus on West Front Street.
However, the board has not voted on the issue, Mrs. Carr said. So that is what it plans to do on Monday.
