AT&T foundation donates $20K to TJC

A $20,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation will benefit Tyler Junior College dual-credit students from Arp, Chapel Hill, Lindale, John Tyler and Robert E. Lee.
Candice Gast, AT&T director of external affairs, on Wednesday presented the check to TJC President Dr. Mike Metke and Mayor Barbara Bass.
Metke thanked the foundation and state Sen. Kevin Eltife, who he said continues to encourage corporate partnerships and philanthropic support for education in the community, according to the news release.
Eltife said for many high school students the AT&T Scholars Program represents the first step toward earning a degree.
“The AT&T Foundation has made an investment not only in our students but in our future nurses, teachers, technicians, and other highly skilled professionals,” Eltife said, according to the news release.
The TJC Foundation will match this grant, meaning $40,000 will be provided for the AT&T Scholars Program for the 2012 and 2013 academic years, according to the news release.
Dr. Kim Russell, TJC vice president for advancement and external affairs, said the goal of the AT&T Scholars Program is to encourage more economically disadvantaged students to complete college-level courses while in high school, according to the news release.
“We know that if at-risk high school students successfully complete one or more college-level courses, they are more likely to graduate and have a greater chance of attaining a post-secondary degree or certificate in the future,” she said, according to the news release.
