A.M. Update: Goodell wants NFL rule changes, no more 'lunatic'
The word "lunatic" will be stricken from federal law under legislation that passed the House by a vote of 398-1. The congressional action is the most recent effort to eliminate language from the U.S. code that has become outdated or demeaning. Two years ago, Congress removed references in federal law to the term "mental retardation." The only "no" vote was cast by East Texas congressman Louie Gohmert, who said in a statement that, "not only should we not eliminate the word "lunatic" from federal law when the most pressing issue of the day is saving our country from bankruptcy, we should use the word to describe the people who want to continue with business as usual in Washington."
NFL fans, take note. Commissioner Roger Goodell is the cover story on this week's Time Magazine, and the article reveals that a radical rule change completely eliminating kickoffs has been discussed. Instead of a kickoff, the team that scored would then take the ball on its own 30-yard line in, essentially, a 4th-and-15 situation. In other words, they could attempt to keep their offense on the field and try to pick up 15 yards, at the risk of turning the ball over on downs; or they could punt. The idea behind eliminating kickoffs would be to reduce the number of serious injuries that occur on those plays.
