UPDATE: Two Taken To Hospital After Smith County House Fire
STAFF REPORTS
Two people trying to fight a house fire in the 12500 block of County Road 1113 were taken to a hospital late Tuesday.

Howard Harris, chief of the Noonday Volunteer Fire Department, said when he arrived two people were taken to the hospital after trying to fight the fire before fire crews arrived.

Smith County Fire Marshal Jim Seaton said the two people were the homeowners and were taken to Mother Frances Hospital. Seaton said the two had family on the way and had a place to stay the night.

Firefighters said earlier Tuesday that they contained the fire around 11:02 p.m., but later a fire rekindled at the back of the house that crews were working to extinguish around 11:30 p.m.

Harris said that about half the house was destroyed and the other part suffered heavy smoke damage.

Jonathan McClish, assistant fire chief for Noonday Volunteer Fire Department, said when the department arrived on the scene, the carport was on fire as well as some rooms of the house.

Harris said a preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the carport area.

Firefighters got the call about the fire at 9:51 p.m.

County Road 1113 was closed to traffic late Tuesday as firefighters were working to extinguish the blaze and assess damage.

Smith County Sheriff's Office, Noonday, Dixie, Flint-Gresham and Whitehouse fire departments responded as well as East Texas Medical Center EMS.
