Trial date slated for man accused of killing friend
The murder trial for a Smith County man, accused of shooting and killing a female acquaintance in March at his home, will begin Jan. 14 in the 114th District Court.
Larry Joe Smith, 68, told police in March that someone broke into his front window and attempted to break into his house, so he fired a shot through the window, Smith County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Garmon said at that time.
Once deputies arrived on scene, they found a white female, Sandra Greenshaw, on the front porch with a single gunshot wound to her upper body. Ms. Greenshaw was taken to East Texas Medical Center, where she later died.

Garmon said Smith told authorities he didn't know who he was shooting at, but evidence at the scene did not match his story.
Authorities later found out the two were at least acquaintances, and Ms. Greenshaw's keys and shoes were found inside Smith's home, he said.
“We're still investigating it. We feel like he knew who he was shooting when he shot her. The evidence doesn't add up to what he's telling us. He changed his story (multiple times) and got to the point where he (said he) doesn't remember what happened,” Garmon said.
Smith is in the Smith County Jail on a $1 million bond.
