Election is over, November 28
The post mortem of the 2012 election is in full swing. Monday-morning quarterbacks are critiquing strategy and tactics, analyzing numbers and speculating on how to reach this group or that group. There is plenty of room for this by those disappointed with the outcome of the race.
I am disappointed too, but not for what we did, but for what we didn’t do. For years now we have been slipping toward some mirror of European socialism: A bigger, more expansive and more expensive central government dictating the economic and social activities of the people.
I was hoping, since we had candidates with vastly different ideologies, that the Republicans would spend more time explaining to the nation the virtues and results of a smaller government that lived within its means. A government whose policies encourage rather than impair a vibrant free market economy. A government of law bonded to the Constitution. One which nurtures the opportunity for individuals to excel and allows them to keep the fruits of their labor in excess of what the government needs to fulfill its constitutional functions. I wanted to hear the need of a strong military to protect and defend the country. I would liked to have seen discussed the distribution of power and responsibility which is given to the sovereign states by our constitution.
Many would say this would be nonsense or political suicide. Maybe. But at least we could have had an up or down vote by the people on the system under which they want to live. I would like to have had it discussed in down-to-earth understandable English. The people understand. They don’t need to be talked down to as if they were stupid, nor lectured by elitists.
