End of autumn, November 28
When I stepped out of the house this morning to get the paper, I was reminded of the scene in Gone With The Wind, when Melanie kissed her husband goodbye in what she described as “a swirl of autumn leaves.”

Kissing someone goodbye wasn’t what I was reminded of; it was the swirl of autumn leaves part. A gust of wind came through about the time I left the front door and the three big trees in our yard discarded about fifty percent of their dead leaves.

“A swirl of autumn leaves”? It was more than that. I stood there a few moments, ankle deep in leaves, and contemplating what the next move would entail.

It’s the price we pay, I guess, for living in the prettiest part of the state.
