Toppings! closes; Big competition blamed

After less than a year in business, Toppings! Yogurt Shoppe has closed its doors.

Co-owner Robert Owens said the business was running at about half of where it needed to be and fortunately, a man wanted to buy it. He said the man bought the business and moved it to Mount Pleasant.

The store opened in Tyler during the first week of October 2011, and closed at the end of September. Toppings Yogurt Shoppe was a new concept for local business owners Robert and Kandi Owens, owners of Traditions restaurant, and Scott and April Roycroft, owners of Heartland Ham. The Owens and Roycrofts are also franchisees of Corner Bakery Café, which shared the building with Toppings! Yogurt Shoppe.

“Too many yogurt businesses came in at the same time,” Owens said of why he thinks the Toppings! Yogurt Shoppe didn't do as well as he had hoped.

His shop opened around the same time as a second TCBY franchise in Tyler. There is also an Orange Leaf in Tyler. Top That Yogurt opened in Whitehouse in August and a TCBY recently opened in Lindale.

Owens said they are looking for a tenant to lease the now vacant 2,000-square-foot space, at 3304 Troup Highway. He said it could be a food-related business but he would like to have something that is not similar to Corner Bakery Café.

Mark Whatley, of Burns Commercial Properties, is the space's broker.
