Businesses celebrate 4th annual Brick Streets Stroll

A group of small business owners are welcoming everyone to the Historic Brick Streets District on Saturday for some shopping, fellowship and holiday spirit.
From noon to 7 p.m., residents can enjoy carriage rides, carolers, a visit with Santa Claus, a cake walk and mu-s-ic during the fourth annual Br-ick Street St-roll.
The main reason for the event is to celebrate National Small Business Saturday and encourage people to "shop small," Rhonda Reuter, owner of Crafts & Quilting, Etc., said.
"With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy," she said.
Ms. Reuter said the group of about eight small business owners depend on customers getting out to their side of town to shop. They want people to know where they are, especially people in their neighborhood, she added.
Shops participating in the area include Brady's Coffee, Encore Furniture Consignment, Brick Street Pharmacy, Laughing Leaf, Dory's Gardens, Carriage House Gallery, Robert Langham Photography, Holt House and Crafts & Quilting, Etc.
Santa will pass out candy canes to children during appearances at about 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.; and Farm Valley Carriages will take patrons for a ride back in time on the brick streets for $25 for up to six people, from 1 to 6 p.m. Ms. Reuter said there also will be carolers singing throughout the day, as well as refreshments, drawings, door prizes and shop discounts.
She said several of the shop owners also have been working for weeks on a large canvas mural depicting their shops in a snowy hillside with the message, Peace on Earth as a constellation in the sky. The artwork will be unveiled Saturday on the historical Azalea Building on West Phillips Street, which houses several of the shops. The businesses also are decorated for the holidays.
The event will be in the 700 block of South Bois d'Arc and West Phillips streets, between College and Chilton avenues. It also includes businesses on Rusk Street.
