Houston man, 31, arrested for stealing car with baby inside
Staff Reports

A man was arrested in Upshur County Wednesday after allegedly stealing a car with an infant inside and leaving the baby on the side of the road.

The stolen vehicle was reported to the Gilmer Police from the Texaco station on U.S. Highway 217, south of Gilmer about 12:30 p.m., according to a statement from the department. Inside the vehicle was a one-year-old baby boy.

Gilmer Police Sgt. Investigator Roxanne Warren said the mother of the baby worked at the station and was busy carrying boxes from the vehicle to the inside of the store. Warren said the car was running and the baby was safely secured in the backseat, but the mother was feet away from the vehicle.

Sgt. Warren said a 31-year old man with a Houston address allegedly stole the car while the mother dropped off a load of boxes.

About 25 minutes later, police found the baby on the side of an Upshur County road still in the car seat, according to the release. The boy was unharmed and safely returned to his mother. Shortly after the boy was found, officers found the vehicle abandoned off Limetree Road in Upshur County.

The department, Upshur County Sheriff deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers began the search for a suspect, and he was taken into custody at a home on South Live Oak Road in the county, according to the release.

Warren said the man allegedly cut himself and was taken to East Texas Medical Center in Gilmer, where he was treated for self-inflicted injuries.

Warren said a first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping charge is pending, but as of press time the man had not been not charged.
