Staff reports
Farm-to-Market Road 1653, north of FM 858 near Martins Mill in Van Zandt County, will remain closed throughout the night after a tanker wrecked and spilled gasoline in the roadway and ditch.
DPS Trooper Odie Phillips said as of about 8:30 p.m., the wreckage had been cleared away, but gasoline was still standing in the ditches.
He said the Texas Department of Transportation was en route to close the road for the night, and in the morning underground cable and gas lines will have to be marked before TCEQ can begin cleanup efforts.
Structures have been set up to keep the spill from spreading further.
The tanker rolled over at around 10:40 a.m. today, said Gary Corley, a lieutenant with the South Van Zandt volunteer fire department.
Phillips said the driver, identified as 37-year-old Calvin Childress of Killeen, took a curve too quickly on FM 1653.
Childress sustained minor injuries. Phillips said Childress was ticketed for unsafe speed, and the violation will go to him and not the trucking company.
Another tanker was brought in to transfer the unspilled gasoline, and a wrecker took the one that wrecked away.
Tyler hazmat personnel and TCEQ will determine the severity of the spill and what to do to clean it up. Other responding agencies included the Red Cross, Ben Wheeler Fire Department, TxDOT, the Van fire department and the Van Zandt County Sheriff's Office.
