Whether it's paper or siding, Sam Oliphant has been in sales his whole career.

Oliphant, who works for Straightline Siding, was born and raised in Mount Pleasant. His dad worked in the field for American Petrofina, while his mother was a nurse. He grew up with two sisters and a brother.

He ran the 800 and mile events for the Mount Pleasant High School track team.

After graduating in 1975, he attended Tyler Junior College, where he studied business, receiving his associate degree in 1977.

He went to work handling office supplies and sales for Story-Wright Inc. in Tyler and spent more than a decade with that company.

In 1989, he joined Butler Paper on Texas Highway 31 West. The company sold paper and janitorial supplies.

“It was kind of like Dixie Paper,” Oliphant said.

He worked for Butler Paper until 1995, when he took a job with Vincent Graphics where he stayed until 2001, when he joined Bullard siding.

He moved from Bullard Siding to Straightline Siding in 2006 and has been there ever since, working as a sales and service consultant.

Straightline Siding, at 20841 U.S. 69 between Tyler and Bullard, offers vinyl siding and trim, vinyl and aluminum replacement windows, entry doors, patio and storm doors, carport covers and patio covers.

The business also handles patio enclosures, sunrooms, pergolas and screen room.

“I just love meeting people,” Oliphant said of what he loves most about his sales work. “I'm a people person.

“All my appointments are in the house. I love to sit back and look at the quality of work that we do.”

He has been married to Liz since 1991. They met through friends in Tyler, and their first date was going out to dinner. They have a grown daughter.

Oliphant, 56, serves as an ambassador for the Tyler Area Builders Association. He loves to fish and travel to places such as Mexico, Jamaica and around the United States.
