East Texans join quest to slim region
BRENDA & FAWN COMBS, VAN
The activity around the tents on Saturday caught Ms. Combs and her granddaughter’s eyes. It wasn’t until they were interviewed that they learned of Lighten Up East Texas.
“We were in town for a movie and just happened to stop by to see what was going on,” Ms. Combs said.
Upon signing up, they also created a team, which will include Ms. Comb’s daughter (Fawn’s mother). Ms. Combs said the challenge is just what they needed. Her granddaughter will travel to Italy in March and will be incentivized to lose weight to be in shape for the long walks during the trip.

VERLETHA REDWINE, TYLER
Ms. Redwine, an employee at Trane, has experienced a yo-yo weight loss. The contest, she said, will help her stay focused on her goal.
“You’re with some people to get the support you need,” she said.
While at the event Saturday, Ms. Redwine found some people she knew, and they pledged to stay in contact daily to discuss health and nutrition while keeping each other motivated.

DAWN SMITH, BIG SANDY
Mrs. Smith had already lost 73.6 pounds on her own, and when she learned of the challenge, she became excited about the possibilities.
“I figured it would be even more motivation,” she said. “I’d like to lose 100 more (pounds). I have to be here for my four kids. … I’m gonna do it, too.”

TODD & MYRA RUSSELL, WINONA
Myra Russell, who works at a Tyler law office, wants to lose 40 pounds. She joined the challenge as part of her job’s team, Under Heavy. Her husband joined her in the challenge to be of support and to reach his goals as well.
“This will help me put it into perspective,” Russell said. “I need to eat better, exercise. I need to lose 75 pounds, at least.”
