Continuing education vital for keeping licences current

Continuing Education Units, or CEUs, are required by some to maintain a license, to stay current on new technologies and practices, or to help reinforce forgotten information.
Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, is a pest population management system that anticipates and prevents pests from causing damage. IPM is an ecological approach to pest control, and uses components such as pest identification, monitoring of the pest, use of natural enemies such as biological controls, pest-resistant plants, cultural and structural changes and the judicious use of least toxic pesticides to control pests.
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offers CEUs for those needing hours toward their Texas Department of Agriculture licenses, either commercial, non-commercial or private applicators. An annual five CEU Beef and Forage course is set for Nov. 16, at the Rusk County Exposition Center, at 3303 Farm-to-Market 13 West in Henderson. This annual course is a multi-county effort between Cherokee, Panola, Rusk and Smith counties. This course will provide three hours general, one hour laws and regulations and one hour integrated pest management.
Registration for this course is due by Nov. 13 by calling 903-657-0376 for meal planning purposes. A $30 registration fee will be charged for this program to cover the noon meal and program expenses.
An EarthKindŽ Landscape Workshop will be held Dec. 5-6 in Tyler. The Earth-KindŽ Landscape Workshop is a continuing education program designed for professionals responsible for managing and maintaining urban green space such as residential landscape, parks, commercial properties and golf courses. The course will also benefit municipalities, schools and city water utility personnel, particularly those interested in developing sustainable urban landscape conservation programs.

Six land-grant university personnel from three states draw upon their expertise to address landscape industry issues, problems and opportunities in a well-balanced two-day program. This course has been approved for six TNLA CEUs for Wednesday and seven CEUs for Thursday. Texas Department of Agriculture CEUs have been approved for Ag CEU (three and one-half general and five IPM) and SPCS CEU (one general safety, one general other, three general IPM, one weed and two lawn and ornamental).
