We are entering the time of the year that can be a killer on our waistlines.
First comes the Halloween candy (I have been guilty of eating more than my children), and then Thanksgiving with its turkey and dressing and pumpkin pie and then holiday parties with the decadent sweets and buffets of snacks and then the Christmas feast fit for a fat king.
Good grief. I gained 10 pounds just thinking about it.
But Fit City Tyler says this doesn’t have to be the season to bulk up. Instead, it can be the season to lighten up.
The organization that encourages us to take charge of our fitness “one bite, one step and one health-conscious decision at time” has announced its first Lighten Up East Texas Regional Weight Loss Challenge.
The challenge will begin with a weigh-in event beginning at 9 a.m. on Nov. 3 in Tyler’s Bergfeld Park. Organizations will be on hand to provide the information and encouragement we need to responsibly begin to take off pounds. Additional weigh-in opportunities will take place on Nov. 9 and Nov. 16 at designated sites. At the initial weigh-in, those taking part will receive participant cards.
The final weigh-ins will take place between April 19 and May 4.
The winners will be determined by the highest percentage of body weight lost between the two weigh-in dates.
“We didn’t want this to be a biggest loser type contest. We wanted it to be based on percentage of body weight lost so more people can have a chance to win,” said George Roberts, director of the Northeast Texas Public Health District and one of the leaders of Fit City Tyler.
Dave Berry, managing editor of the Tyler Paper, and a Lighten Up East Texas contest organizer, said that both individuals and teams will be able to compete.

The challenge is already drawing interest from all across the area, Berry said. It is expected to be the largest contest of its kind ever held in East Texas.
Berry and Roberts are working with sponsors to come up with prizes. Although they are not quite ready to announce what they have secured as the top prize, they are hinting it is going to be a big deal.
More information about Lighten Up East Texas will be coming out in the next few weeks. You can read the contest’s rules and regulations by going to the fitcitytyler.com website and clicking on the contest logo.
