A 23-year-old Gilmer man was killed when his pickup overturned on rural Bluebird Road, south of the city early Sunday, Upshur County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace W.V. Ray said.
Ray said he pronounced Karl Oney Jr. dead at the scene at 5:50 a.m. after the crash occurred about 4 a.m.
Oney's father, well-known Gilmer businessman Wayne Oney, was a candidate earlier this year in the Republican primary for Precinct 1 county commissioner.
Ray quoted the Texas Department of Public Safety as saying Karl Oney Jr. was alone when his westbound truck ran off the oil top county road and he overcorrected it. According to Ray, the DPS said the vehicle went onto the side of an embankment and overturned. The judge said he did not know if Oney was wearing a seatbelt.
Ray said he did not order an autopsy. Oney's body was taken to Croley Funeral Home in Gilmer. Further details were not immediately available from the DPS.
