Staff Reports

An East Texas school district is in the running for recognition as the state’s top school board.

The Texas Association of School Administrators selected Longview Independent School District as one of five Honor School Boards, according to a news release.

The School Board Awards Program recognizes outstanding Texas school boards for their commitment to schoolchildren and their communities.

Since 1971, the program has honored school boards that have demonstrated dedication to student achievement, making every effort to put students first, according to the news release.

Longview ISD along with the Cedar Hill, Klein, McAllen and Northwest school districts will be interviewed at the association’s fall convention in Austin and one school board will be chosen as the 2012 Outstanding School Board.

All five Honor Board finalists along with regional winners will be recognized during the convention. The regional honor boards are Pittsburg, Socorro and Southwest school districts.
