Romney the right candidate at just the right time
A recent Tyler Paper had an article by Beth Fouhy of the Associated Press. It was a critique on Gov. Mitt Romney’s speech at the GOP convention. Her main theme echoed the Democratic talking points. “He (Romney) resisted entreaties to get more specific about the spending cuts he proposed.” He would not go into detail about his five-point program. This would be pure insanity and self defeating, especially for a Republican. Romney would get excoriated by all Democratic pundits. In 50 years, never have I heard any president give a detailed plan until he was elected.
And we have yet to see a budget from the Democrats in more than three years.
Contrary to the critics, I think Gov. Romney is the best nominee we have had since Ronald Reagan. Romney is an intelligent, tireless worker, he has high values and a wealth of business experience.
He has been successful in every station of life. He is the ideal candidate at the perfect time. He will bring this country forward.

CHEROKEE SPENDING
On Sept. 10 and 14, the Cherokee County Commissioners Court will conduct hearings to discuss their proposed tax increase of 2 cents per $100 of property valuation.
After reviewing the county financial records for the past 10 years, I see signs of the county’s financial demise.
In 2009, commissioners voted to increase their share of the budget from 18 percent to 22.7 percent. This continued level of spending has reduced the county’s cash on hand by an extra $4.7 million.
The cash on hand is scheduled to go from $9.4 million in 2009 to $1.4 million by the end of the 2013 budget year.
That will put the county’s available cash at less than 8 percent of the annual operating budget.
Commissioners have amassed an inventory of new equipment that far exceeds the needs of the county. Commissioners initiated a massive road paving project in 2009 that has cost the county’s taxpayers more than $1 million per year. And they’ve voted a 3 percent pay raise for themselves in the proposed 2013 budget.
I wonder how many trips, which are not mandated, they have planned for the upcoming year.
What can we do? We can protest to our elected officials at those hearings.

JUST THE TRUTH
Are you sick to your stomach of the barrage of lies, distortions and half-truths bombarding us in the presidential political campaigns? This election is, by far, the worst to date and makes it more difficult than ever to determine the truth.
I have an idea that would address the problem if I could just find the right person in congress to introduce a bill. Why not require any candidate in a national election to take truth serum?
What is truth serum you ask? The simplest definition I’ve run across is: A psychoactive medication used to obtain information from subjects who are unable or unwilling to provide it otherwise.
What could be simpler than making this a prerequisite for running? No more trying to figure out if the candidates are telling the truth about their claims and accusations. No more trying to learn something from their body language or being influenced by their looks, speaking ability and the way they dress.
I realize that finding someone to introduce such a bill is going to be the major problem in this project, but it doesn’t hurt to dream.
