Nonprofit groups receive $30,000 in grant funding

Representatives of nonprofits in Smith County gathered Wednesday to receive the annual Community Builders Grant from the East Texas Communities Foundation and United Way of Smith County. The combined total of funds awarded this year was more than $30,000.
Recipients are chosen based on applications that represent “strong projects based on good ideas and compelling needs which have the potential to improve our Smith County community and the lives of its people,” according to a written release from the East Texas Communities Foundation. “Grant support is offered in the areas of education, health, human services, and the arts and humanities.”
The grant committee considered more than 40 applicants requesting more than $215,000 in funding toward a total of about $6,440,000 in project costs. The total amount awarded was $30,321.

The recipients chosen this year were the American Cancer Society, Bethesda Health Clinic, Cancer Foundation for Life, East Texas Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity of Smith County, Kings Storehouse, Literacy Council of Tyler, Meals on Wheels, PATH, Pine Cove and St. Paul Children's Foundation.
In 2011, the East Texas Communities Foundation awarded $4.83 million in grants and manages more than $50 million in 184 unique charitable funds, which support nonprofit organizations and student scholarships.
United Way serves all of Smith County and currently is funding 30 programs of 23 member agencies. Allocations to the agencies for the funding year 2012-2013 totaled more than $1 million. All funds raised in Smith County stay in Smith County.
