Two types of West Nile added to list of cases
Staff Reports

State officials added two more cases of West Nile to the tally in East Texas.

A case of West Nile fever, the less severe form of infection, and a single case of the neuroinvasive illness were recorded in Cherokee County.
The neuroinvasive form of the virus can complicate other preexisting medical conditions.

As of Wednesday afternoon, 783 cases of the virus were recorded statewide in 73 counties, according to Texas Department of State Health Services records. The majority of those were neuroinvasive, with 416 cases.

The state has experienced 31 fatalities this year, which surpasses the previous record of fatalities related to the virus set in 2007, when 17 fatalities were reported, according to the department.

In total, there are five fewer cases of the disease reported this year than in each year since 2007, according to the department.
