Hall-of-Fame running back Earl Campbell was on hand for the announcement of a national award in his name to be given annually to the top Division I college football offensive player in the country on Thursday afternoon in his hometown.

The honor will be called the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose award.

The announcement came during the East Texas Kick-off Luncheon at the Patriot Center on the UT Tyler campus.

The award will be presented during an annual ceremony yearly in Tyler. The accolade joins a long list of collegiate awards, including the Doak Walker and Davey O'Brien.

Campbell, who won the Heisman Trophy award at Texas in 1977, is widely considered one of the best running backs in history. He was taken with the first overall pick of the 1978 draft by the Houston Oilers.

Campbell was named NFL MVP three times over his pro career.

The "Tyler Rose" led John Tyler to a state championship in 1973.
