Raves, Rants, & Roses, August 19
Grateful
ROSES: On behalf of Meals On Wheels Ministry, I would like to send roses to Tyler Junior College’s Program Development Manager, Continuing Education, Carla Curtis and members of the Summer Computer Camp.
Through a program designed by Mrs. Curtis and Workforce Solutions of East Texas, these students built and donated nine fully equipped computers, with all the accessories, to several nonprofits in Tyler, including Meals on Wheels.
Our organization received three of the computer systems, and not only will this equipment provide much needed technology to Meals On Wheels, but the dollar amount it will save the organization is enough to feed three seniors in need for an entire year.
We are so grateful to these students who saw an opportunity to use their expertise and hard work in a way that would benefit their community. Our community should be proud of educators like Carla Curtis, who impart lessons beyond the textbook to their students, as well as institutions like TJC that foster learning and enrichment through creative programs such as this.

Big Thank You
ROSES: A big “thank you” to the East Texas Down Syndrome Group for hosting the Back To School Bowling Bash at Green Acres Baptist Church Family Life Center on Aug. 13.
The Bunger family did a superb job coordinating the social and welcoming everyone as guests arrived. Since many of the ETDSG volunteers are busy preparing for the 11th annual East Texas Down Syndrome Buddy Walk at Teague Park in Longview on Oct. 13, the extra opportunity to gather was much appreciated.

Good Column
RAVES: I want to thank you for running Walter William’s column in your paper.
I think some of the folks in Washington should listen to him, or at least read some of his writings.
Seems we are not too good at looking at history and learning. This applies to individuals as well.
We can learn a lot by looking back days and years and learning. We certainly do not need socialism.

College Football
RANT: Television money is destroying college football. What makes college football great is traditional rivalries.
This year, The University of Texas will not be playing their longtime rival Texas A&M, but instead will play West Virginia.
If it was put to a vote, the Texas populace would never agree to this.
Now we have a college playoff system. Supposedly this will give us a national champion. Every football fan knows this will be dominated by a few teams. We should not destroy college football by trying to make it into another NFL.
