UPDATE: Van Zandt County murder victims have been dead for several days

Two bodies found in a Van Zandt County home today have been dead for several days, according to the county district attorney.

Chris Martin said the bodies are so badly decomposed that investigators are not sure how they were killed.

Two stolen cars are part of the puzzle law enforcement officials are trying to solve in Van Zandt County today at the scene of an apparent double homicide.

The home where the double homicide occurred is located at 2221 Van Zandt County Road 4812. The home is owned by Peter and Latricia Shick. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims. They will likely wait until after autopsies are performed, Martin said.

Officials said a car reported stolen in Kaufman County was found at the scene of the crime, and a car belonging to the property owners is not there and apparently stolen. Investigators believe someone drove the Kaufman County car to the residence, killed the two people, and then left in the other vehicle.

Sheriff Pat Burnett said the victims are a male and a female. An official told the Tyler Paper the two are an elderly couple.

“We have some pretty good leads at this time, but this will end up involving multiple counties,” he said.

Martin said a person of interest has been identified, and that area law enforcement agencies have been notified.
