East Texans showed up in droves at local Chick-fil-A restaurants today to show support for the company’s stance on gay marriage.

The support comes after Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy, in his statement to “The Baptist Press” in July, stated he supported the “the biblical definition of the family unit.”

Lines stretched out the door at the Chick-fil-A on Broadway in Tyler around noon. Manager Barb Carter said the restaurant had been packed all day and that people were waiting for them to open at 6:30 a.m.

“We were encouraged to have extra staff on hand and prepare for a busy day,” Ms. Carter said. “We had no idea there would be this many people.”

Shanna Best, 25, of Tyler came to Chick-fil-A today to show her support for the company’s values.

“When I heard what was going on, I was all for supporting it,” Ms. Best said. “Because I’m a Christian, I stand with others who uphold Christian beliefs and morals. This is a good company.”

Traffic at the Chick-fil-A Troup Highway location near Loop 323 is backed up at least a quarter-mile in each direction due to people trying to get into the restaurant, according to a Tyler Paper reporter.

Lines of people waiting to place orders are out both doors of the facility, and stretch into the adjacent Super 1 Foods parking lot.

According to Tyler Transportation, the north-bound lanes of South Broadway in front of Broadway Crossing are closed down to motor vehicle traffic due to people trying to get in and out of Chick-fil-A at 5716 South Broadway Avenue.

Chick-fil-A has drawn some controversy recently due to its company president's comments against gay marriage.

Wednesday has been deemed "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day" by former Arkansas governor and Fox News personality Mike Huckabee.

At 11:07am this morning, one Tyler Paper staff member has reported being in line at the Chick-Fil-A on Troup Hwy since 10:45am and is not yet near to being served because of the crowd.

ATLANTA (AP) — Supporters of Chick-fil-A are planning to eat at restaurants in the chicken chain as the company continues to be criticized for an executive's comments about gay marriage.

The line at the Chick-Fil-A on Troup Hwy stretches around the store and outside.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared Wednesday national "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press last month that the Atlanta-based company was "guilty as charged" for backing "the biblical definition of a family." That unleashed a torrent of criticism from gay rights groups and others, who have called for boycotts and efforts to block the chain from opening new stores.

Opponents of the company's stance are planning "Kiss Mor Chiks" for Friday, when they are encouraging people of the same sex to show up at Chick-fil-A restaurants around the country and kiss each other.
