Smith County Foot Chase Ends In Calling For Mother
By ADAM RUSSELL

Smith County deputies apprehended a man in Malibu Bay subdivision off Texas Highway 155 south in Dogwood City after a foot pursuit ended in Lake Palestine Monday evening.

Smith County Sheriff's Office Lt. Tony Dana said the man was stopped for a traffic violation in Lake Way Harbor and displayed a knife to the deputy before running. Deputies cornered the man near Big Oak Drive before he jumped into Lake Palestine to escape, Dana said.

After a brief swim, deputies captured the man.

A cavalcade of sheriff's office vehicles stopped in front of Pop's Chicken and Fish on Texas 155 to prevent the man from jumping from a patrol car shortly after leaving the subdivision.

Dana said the man kicked the passenger window out of the deputy's Ford F-150 and was wiggling out the window of the moving vehicle while wearing handcuffs and leg irons.

A Tyler Paper reporter at the scene saw that after a brief struggle, six deputies emerged with the man, likely in his mid-20s, who was crying, complainging that his eyes were burning, swearing at his captors and calling for his mother.

The deputies placed him in another patrol car and took him to the county jail.

Dana said the man was not cooperating and is yet to be identified. He is likely to be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, evading arrest, aggravated assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest and possibly attempted escape.
