Tyler Employment Numbers Take Slight Dip

Tyler’s employment rate for June slid for the second consecutive month.
The Tyler area saw a 92.5 percent employment rate last month, a slump from the 93.2 percent in May and 93.6 in April, according to figures released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission.
But last month’s employment rate is a jump from the 91.9 percent rate experienced by the area in June 2011.
Texas Workforce Commission officials touted that the state’s employment numbers continue to outpace the country’s.
“Growth in June brought the number of private-sector jobs in Texas to more than 9 million,” TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Tom Pauken said in a prepared statement. “Our state’s private sector has grown at a rate of 3.2 percent over the last year, compared to the national private sector’s annual growth rate of just 1.8 percent.”
Similar to the Tyler area, the state and country also experienced sagging employment rates for June, compared to the month before, but also saw an increase from the same time last year.
Texas’ employment rate in June was 92.4 percent, down from 93.1 in May and a slight increase from the 91.4 percent seen for Texas in June 2011.
The June employment rate for the United States was at 91.6 percent, a slight dip from the 92.1 percent seen the month before. The country’s employment rate last month was also an increase from the 90.7 percent a year ago.

“For nearly two years, employers in Texas have expanded their payrolls and kept the economic engine of Texas moving forward,” TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar said. “Since last year, the Texas economy has added more than 282,000 private-sector jobs.”
The state’s economy added 12,900 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in June.
Several Texas industries added jobs last month, led by construction, which expanded by 9,600 jobs. The construction sector has posted annual gains for six consecutive months. The industry has added 24,400 jobs over the year, for a 4.4 percent annual growth rate. The other services industry, which includes employment in equipment and machinery repair, personal care services and social and civic organizations, gained 4,900 positions in June. The sector has seen a 4.9 percent annual growth rate over the past year.
“Texas’ labor force continues to grow, and is at an all-time high of nearly 13 million workers and job seekers,” TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton said. “People are flocking to Texas in search of jobs that employers are creating at a better rate than most other states.”
Employment in education and health services showed positive gains as the industry grew by 3,400 jobs in June. The industry experienced an increase of 46,800 jobs in the last year, for an annual growth rate of 3.3 percent.
Employers in the financial-activities industry expanded their payrolls by 2,900 employees last month, and have grown by 16,700 in the past year.
At 95.7 percent, Midland once again had the best employment rate in the state in June, while the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission area had the lowest, at 88 percent.
