United Way To Launch Its Campaign This Week
The United Way of Tyler/Smith County will launch its 2012 campaign this week.
"Last year alone, over 64,000 of our Smith County neighbors were helped by programs supported by people who give to our local United Way," Reece Anderson, the campaign director, announced in a news release.
"Think Local. Give Local" is the campaign theme.
"As a community, we are all connected," Nan Moore, United Way president, said in the news release. "We have been reminded over the past year that what affects one of our Smith County neighbors will in some way affect all of us."
One out of three people in Smith County was in some way impacted by United Way or one of the many nonprofit organizations that it helps fund, according to information on United Way's website,
The organization promises that a lot of good can be done with even a small weekly donation.
A donation of $2.50 a week can provide:
• Seven weeks of supervised after-school care for a child of working parents;
• Thirty hours of in-home care for a sick or disabled person;
• Vision screening for 33 preschoolers;
• Flouride dental treatments for 750 kids for one year.
A donation of $5 a week can provide:
• Two months of support services for those with cerebral palsy
• Two nights of shelter and a safe haven from domestic abuse for a mother and her children;
• One month of chores service for an elderly person;
• Ten weeks of tutoring for an illiterate adult.
A donation of $7.50 a week can provide:
• Six weeks of tutoring for a homeless child who is falling behind in school;
• Three months of substance abuse counseling for three individuals;
• Sixteen hours of legal counseling for low-income individuals;
• One mannequin for teaching CPR
A donation of $10 a week can provide:
• The cost of downloading an e-book each week:
• Twenty-one days of care for a senior citizen at a shelter;
• Five weeks of occupational training of a handicapped person;
• Fifteen hours of training to help a visually impaired person find a job.
A donation of $15 a week can provide:
• Fourteen sessions of therapy for an at-risk family;
• Two months worth of diapers and formula for four infants int a shelter;
• Eleven months of group therapy for recovering alcoholics;
• Seventeen sessions of speech and physical therapy for a handicapped individual.
A donation of $20 a week can provide:
• Three weeks of nursing visits for an elderly individual on fixed income;
• Food and clothing for two out of every four people hit by natural disaster;
• Two months of day care for a special-needs child;
• Eight hours of physical therapy for an individual with traumatic brain injury.
