Stratton Hibbs Selected For Julliard Jazz Residency
Stratton Hibbs, 14, of Tyler is taking part in the Juilliard Jazz Residency in West Palm Beach, Fla. Hibbs is one of five double bass players taking part in the summer program for 14 to19 year olds.
Hibbs is an incoming freshman at Grace Community High School where he plays in the orchestra, praise band, jazz band and sings in the choir. The Tyler Youth Orchestra awarded him a partial scholarship to attend this camp based on his service as their principal bassist for the 2011-2012 season.
He has played two years in the junior high school All Region Orchestra and participated in the Masters Double Bass Camp with Jeff Bradetich, Victor Wooten’s Nature Bass Camp and Camp Electric in Nashville, Tenn.
At the residency prgram, Juilliard staff and guest instructors, who are professional players from well-known jazz bands, inspire, challenge and teach the 60-plus students eight hours every day.
Students are grouped into perfomring ensembles based on their playing level, improvisation and solo skills and theory comprehension
