After Fourth, Cleaning Up Lake Tyler A Big Job

When the fireworks have faded and the charcoal from the cookout is cool after Independence Day, employees from the City of Tyler Water Department start the tedious process of cleaning up.
Holiday festivities at Lake Tyler leave refuse behind that city spokeswoman Susan Guthrie said takes up to a full work week to clear away.
“We have at least eight sites that are the commonly used recreation spots on the lake that they go to,” Mrs. Guthrie said Thursday. “It’s a much more intense clean up.”

By Thursday afternoon, a walk around the Lake Tyler Marina and Hill Creek Park showed that city workers already scoured some of the common areas on the water.
While little bits of firework casings and disposable food wares, such as paper plates and plastic cutlery, were still there, the trash had been emptied and the grassy areas were virtually devoid of evidence of Wednesday’s festivities.
Mrs. Guthrie said the average cleanup time for city employees after a major holiday celebration is around four days.
Independence Day, she said, is the biggest one in terms of mess left behind by visitors.
