Cheeseburgers And The Republic
A few weeks back we discussed the deliciousness of the cheeseburger extravaganza my 13-year-old and I enjoyed on Memorial Day.
My question for readers included their thoughts on constructing the best cheeseburgers and the Coke floats we enjoyed according to their specifications.
One reply came in from Bob. Bob said he takes the leftover coffee from any given morning and pours it over vanilla ice cream to enjoy a delicious treat. I must say that's one I had never heard of and while it would be tempting to think of something silly to say about the odd combination we'll just give Bob a gold star for both creativity and the sheer thrift of utilizing reusable resources.
Recent travels took me to a burger place which seems to be popping up all over the country. Jamie and I first discovered Five Guys on our '08 trip to Washington, D.C., Nothing fancy, just good burgers and superb fries.
They have a few in the DFW area and have arrived without nearly the fanfare or media frenzy surrounding In -N-Out burgers. We highly and wholeheartedly recommend the Five Guys experience. Watch out for the jalapenos. They are hot -- even for me.
The next big holiday up is July Fourth. With all the recent hoopla over the Supreme Court decision on health care reform and other key decisions, it may be easy to forget such a significant holiday. It seems to me our system continues to work in spite of how much gnashing of the teeth must be endured by endless commentary and white noise of those who either like it or not.
It makes you wonder how the storyline would have gone if this were not a presidential election year?
Our Republic has endured many turns in the road and we will endure many more. The only thing that makes me cringe to think I have to endure every four years I continue to live is a presidential election.
The thought of the bombardment of campaigns that now expend about $2 billion is sickening to think this could reach into as much as $100 billion if I should be fortunate enough to live to a ripe old age.
Perhaps by then technology will afford us filters to pick and choose how much of the drivel we must endure and just focus on the facts. Maybe Congress will pass a law allowing such a thing that would benefit average Joes everywhere who want to self-regulate the content they receive.
Yea right.
Happy July Fourth and long live the Republic.
