Mother Charged With Assault, Giving Kids Beer At Birthday Party

PALESTINE — A birthday party went awry Wednesday when parents arrived to find their children intoxicated and the host mother hostile to the point of assaulting one parent then threatening her with a butcher knife.

Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said the incident highlighted “stupid choices” made by 38-year-old Rosharon Lummus that resulted in her arrest on multiple charges.

Taylor said the party began Tuesday at a home in the 700 block of County Road 2150, which is southwest of Palestine.

Taylor said shortly after midnight Wednesday, his office was contacted about the party by one of the parents. The subsequent investigation determined that Ms. Lummus bought and supplied Keystone beer to the four youths.

Three of the juveniles were 12, 13 and 14. The fourth juvenile's age was unknown.

Taylor said when one parent picked up her daughter she noticed she was intoxicated and confronted Lummus.

“Lummus began hitting the mother and punching her before she ran into the house to get a large butcher knife, and came back on the porch threatening the woman,” he said.

Taylor said the woman and her daughter were able to escape the scene without further injuries, but he noted the woman did suffer minor scrapes and bruises from the incident.

Taylor said the mother of the 13-year-old took the child home, where the child had what appeared to be a seizure and began having problems breathing.

“She called EMS and they transported the child to the hospital. She was treated for being intoxicated and released,” he said.

Taylor said the juveniles have told authorities that Ms. Lummus also gave them marijuana, but deputies were unable to locate any marijuana at the house.

“One of the kids is telling us that she made them drink, but regardless of whether she made them or gave it to them, she committed a crime,” he said.

Taylor said deputies recovered a large wooden handle kitchen knife from the residence.

Ms. Lummus remained jailed today on felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and endangering a child charges and on the misdemeanor charge of purchasing/supplying alcohol to a minor.
