By BRITTNI BARNETTEN

Staff Writer

Katherine Bryant, a 1983 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, recently was appointed interim police chief in Fayetteville, N.C.

Ms. Bryant is the first female in the city's history to serve in the position.

She has worked with the Fayetteville Police Department for more than 25 years.

After graduating from Fayetteville State University in 1987, Ms. Bryant completed Basic Law Enforcement Training and worked several years as a patrol officer before promoting to sergeant in 1991. She went on to serve in several positions in the department including, most recently, serving as bureau commander of the Campbellton Operations Bureau as an assistant chief.

"It's an awesome police department and it has a lot of opportunity for growth and advancement," Ms. Bryant said. "It's so incredible. I never would have thought when I started out that I would be where I am today."
