Truck Hits Police Cruiser, At Least 2 People Injured

Wills Point police officers were involved in two separate traffic incidents Wednesday night, including one that sent two men to an area hospital and may have injured an officer.

Van Zandt County Sheriff Pat Burnett said Wills Point officers chased a suspected beer thief down U.S. Highway 80 to Van about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

One person was taken into custody in that case, he said. Initial reports indicated gunfire may have been involved in the chase, Burnett said, but that was found untrue.

In a separate incident, two men were taken to an area hospital after flipping their truck and striking a Wills Point police cruiser, he said.

Apparently, a truck was traveling west on the same highway where the pursuit occurred when the driver lost control, the sheriff said.

“It left the roadway, came up, hit a culvert, went airborne, hit the top of the squad car and it went across two lanes and into a ditch,” he said.

The officer was being examined by EMS at the scene of the accident, but the extent of injuries was not known before press time.

Wills Point Police Chief Scott Johnson could not be reached for comment on the incidents Wednesday evening. Burnett said shortly after the accident and pursuit that the chief was tending to his officers involved in each event.
