ETMC's Type 1 Diabetes Camp
Enrollment is now open for children age 6 to 12, with type 1 diabetes for the annual free ETMC Diabetes Boot Camp.
"For a child with type 1 diabetes, every day is a battle to maintain good health, and in some cases, his or her life," said Vickie Robinson, director of diabetes university at ETMC. "The ETMC Diabetes Boot Camp focuses on teaching lessons for life that help kids win the battle."
This year's camp will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 23 to 27 at the ETMC Pavilion Conference Center.
The camp will feature exercise classes including Pilates, Zumba and tai-chi, led by the ETMC Olympic Center staff. Campers will swim in ETMC's pool and be taken by air-conditioned buses to all activities. The week will include photography lessons, a crime scene investigation class, a mini-ropes course, arts and crafts, a water obstacle course and a field trip to the Caldwell Zoo.
"The camp gives the children a chance to meet other kids with type 1 diabetes while learning how to understand and control their diabetes and promote independence and self-discipline while having a fun and exciting week at camp," Ms. Robinson said. "For parents, we want them to know that we will have trained nurses there all week to help the kids manage their diabetes. Also, we will carefully plan out the meals so they are appropriate for what the campers need."
For more information, call ETMC Diabetes University at 903-596-3068. The deadline to register is June 25 and space is limited.
The following are sponsors of the camp: ETMC Foundation FirstChoice Cooperative, Junior League of Tyler, National Healing Corporation, Rose City Kiwanis, Southside Bank, T. B. Butler Foundation, Tyler Morning Telegraph and the Willingham Foundation.
