During the eight-week program, Seaman Mahoney completed a variety of training, which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis also was placed on physical fitness.
Seaman Mahoney is the sister of Brandi M. Mahoney, of Tyler.
Seaman Frost is the daughter of Cynthia J. and Jaye J. Frost, of Gilmer. She is a graduate of Gilmer High School.
Steed, son of Charolette A. and Greg W. Phillips, of Athens, is a graduate of Athens High School. His brother, Brad Phillips, also resides in Athens.
During the five-week course, Pfc. Ortega received instruction in the fundamentals of engineering support for combat units, including the procedures for building and repairing bridges, roads and field fortifications. Pfc. Ortega also received training on demolition concepts, land mine warfare and camouflage techniques.
Pfc. Ortega is a 2011 graduate of Bishop T.K. Gorman High School, of Tyler, and joined the Marine Corps in November 2011.
