The trial for a 29-year-old Tyler man accused of shooting and killing his cousin will get underway tomorrow morning in the Smith County 241st District Court.

Danez Dewayne Black is charged with murder, a first-degree felony which carries a penalty of up to life in prison, according to the Texas Penal Code.

Black is accused of fatally shooting his 21-year-old cousin, Marquis Dwain Black, on October 8 after the two got into a dispute over a blanket that belonged to Danez Black's mother, authorities said. The defendant is being held on $500,000 bond in the Smith County jail.

Tyler Police Spokesman Don Martin said in October that when officers responded to the shooting on Selman Street they encountered Danez Black exiting from the back of the home so they detained him. As they walked through the home, the officers found Marquis Black lying face down on the living room floor.

Martin said the investigation into the death uncovered Marquis died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, but said that Marquis Black's body was transported to Dallas for an autopsy at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences.

According to Smith County records, Danez Black has been arrested twice for assault causing bodily injury and arrested on various misdemeanor charges in the past.
