Residents are invited to Lake Tyler later this month for a day filled with contests and summer fun.
LakeFest, an event hosted by the Whitehouse Area Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. June 30 off the shores of Lake Tyler at McElroy Road.
It features live entertainment, mini dog races, a barbecue cookoff, homemade boat race, washer tournament, car show, boat show by Plano Marine, boat rides, a margarita contest, and helicopter rides, among other things.
Additionally, a sand sculptor is slated to come in from South Padre Island to build a sand castle, and some fireworks should be visible from the event area that night, chamber president Phil Rogers said.
As far as live entertainment, Honeybrowne band will headline.
Admission is free, but there is a registration fee for all contests, except the homemade boat race, and the helicopter and boat rides, according to a news release. Donation jars also will be placed at different vendors.
Proceeds will go to the Philadelphia Blessing food pantry in Whitehouse as well as the Tyler Type One Diabetes Foundation.
"The purpose for the event is to hopefully generate some money for the nonprofits," Rogers said. "The way it started, we have had great community support from Whitehouse. We've done some great fundraisers and this is just something we would like to give back to the community."
The Whitehouse chamber typically has a summer festival in the city park with fireworks and vendors, he said, but this will be the first time the event has been on the lake.
Businesses and individuals still can reserve a booth by registering with the chamber.
Vendors representing or selling food, refreshments, crafts, activities, nonprofit awareness and "anything else family related" also may apply for a booth, according to a news release.
Rogers said those who want a free vendor spot must be a chamber member or sign up to become a member.
