1 Dead, 2 Hurt In Smith County Shooting

A birthday party for a 2-year-old was disrupted Sunday when shots were fired at a home next door, killing one and injuring two others.

Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith said deputies responded to multiple 911 calls Sunday shortly before 5:30 p.m. at 138 County Road 37 where they found 45-year-old Jose Sanchez dead at the scene and two other men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Smith said there were three homes very close to each other, but it was unclear whether the residents were related.

“Right now we really don’t know what happened. There were 40 to 60 people next door to where the shooting happened having a birthday party, but we don’t know if the shooting was related to the party or not,” he said.

Smith said the victims’ names were not being released at this time because it was unclear whether either of the men were suspects.

“We’re having a difficult time right now getting any of the witnesses to talk, but we’re working on it,” he said.
Smith added he was not aware of any weapons found at the scene.

“The investigators are working the case, but at this time we do not have an idea of what triggered the shooting,” he said.
