Tyler ISD Board Set To Review Candidates

Tyler ISD is expected to make three hires today that will help shape the future of secondary education in the district.
Three candidates are expected to be presented to the school board. These are for the executive director of secondary education, John Tyler High School principal and Robert E. Lee High School principal.
The district announced the departures of the three people holding these positions earlier this year.
Jeff Collum, the district’s executive director of secondary education, will head to Arkansas where he accepted a position as Benton School District superintendent.
John Tyler Principal Shon Joseph is headed to North Texas where he will serve as Little Elm High School principal. Robert E. Lee Principal Roger McAdoo is headed to New Caney ISD where he will serve as White Oak Middle School principal.
TISD Superintendent Dr. Randy Reid said for the principal positions that the district was looking for candidates who could work with a broad scope of people.
He said in that position not only are the leaders working with their own team of people, but also they are working with parents and the business community.
He said “putting kids first in decisions” also was an important quality for the candidate to have.
The district was looking for candidates who could continue moving both campuses forward.
He said John Tyler’s team of administrators, teachers and staff members have made great strides in the past few years under Joseph’s leadership.
He said the district was looking for someone who could continue the positive direction.
He said the campus has lacked consistency in leadership, but that is something that is a challenge at the high school level all over the state. He said high school principals, in many cases, are some of the most talented educators around so they often are moving on to other positions.
At Lee, he said McAdoo has “put a really nice mark on the school in terms of his leadership.” However, he said, the campus also has undergone some changes that necessitate a fresh take on leadership.
One of those changes includes becoming a Title 1 school, which means at least 40 percent of Lee’s students come from economically disadvantaged families.
“It’s a steeper challenge for schools to reach kids that come from poverty,” Reid said.
He said the district wanted a candidate who could build on the progress made at Lee and accelerate it in the areas of academic growth and SAT/ACT performance, among other categories.
Reid said the district talked to dozens of candidates through the process, conducting several preliminary interviews over Skype before bringing in candidates for the second round. An administrative team, as well as a campus committee, interviewed several of the candidates. The finalists went through four levels of interviews including one with Reid.
The public meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Dr. Jack L. Davidson Conference Center in the Jim Plyler Instructional Complex, 807 W. Glenwood Blvd., in Tyler.
