Country superstar Trace Adkins was among a crowd of well-wishers who showed up before 6 a.m. today at Brookshire's on Rice Road in Tyler to bid farewell to a group of World War II veterans departing for Washington.

The group, which includes 33 East Texas veterans and about two dozen volunteers, is expected to make a whirlwind, two-day tour of Washington D.C. to view the nation's capital and military monuments.

Veterans participating in the fourth WWII Heroes Flight eased out of Tyler around 6:45 a.m. on a chartered bus, narrowing missing another round of early morning showers, as they made their way to Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport.

The WWII Heroes Flight is free, courtesy of Brookshire's Super 1 Foods. Participants are pre-selected.

Participants are scheduled to return around 7 p.m. Saturday to the Brookshire's store at 100 Rice Road. Residents are encouraged to show up and celebrate their return.
