Two Smith County teens led police on a wild chase through the county Wednesday night, with police saying the pair stole a security vehicle from Emerald Bay.

Smith County Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Dana said an Emerald Bay security guard saw two suspicious individuals around the subdivision, and he got out to question them as to what they were doing.

Dana said the two men then jumped into the security vehicle and sped away.

“He reported the vehicle stolen, and we began keeping an eye out for it. Shortly before 2 a.m. one of our deputies spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle,” he said.

However, Dana said the driver sped away from the deputy, touching off the pursuit, which went into the county before ending in Tyler.

“When they headed back into the city, Tyler police joined in the pursuit, and they were able to deploy spike strips, which stopped the vehicle in the 2700 block of South Broadway,” he said.

Dana said the two 17-year-olds were taken into custody, and Daniel Bennett was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony evading, while the other teen was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

Bennett remained jailed Thursday afternoon on bonds totaling $12,500 and a Texas Youth Commission hold.
