Two Smith County men are behind bars after a wild police chase that started after they allegedly stole a security vehicle from Emerald Bay Wednesday night.

Smith County Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Dana said an Emerald Bay security guard saw two suspicious individuals lurking around the subdivision and he got out to question them as to what they were doing.

Dana said the two men then jumped into the security vehicle and sped away from the area.

“He reported the vehicle stolen and we began keeping an eye out for it. Shortly after 2 a.m., one of our deputies spotted the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle,” he said.

However, Dana said the driver of the vehicle sped away from the deputy, touching off the pursuit, which went through unincorporated Smith County before ending in Tyler.

“When they headed back into the city, Tyler police joined in the pursuit and they were able to deploy spike strips, which stopped the vehicle in the 2700 block of South Broadway,” he said.

Dana said the two were taken into custody. One was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony evading, while the other was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
