Rust The Right Choice, May 23
I decided quite some time ago to support and vote for Donn Rust for our new sheriff. While all candidates have law various law enforcement experience, Donn is the only candidate who also has experience with managing and budgeting organizations that are much larger than the Smith County sheriff’s office. Not only has Donn been responsible for operating budgets as large as $75 million, he had to do so while making a profit. This is good evidence of his fiscal conservatism, something that is needed in our county. This will be especially important, considering the current jail expansion project which will result in even more personnel and an even larger budget for the department once it is complete. Donn has managed nearly twice as many employees compared to the current staffing of the sheriff’s office. While the newspaper criticized Donn for “an almost unlimited propensity to develop personal conflicts with those around him,” I look at this differently. Donn is someone who will stand up for what he believes. For too long, we have put leaders in various positions who “go along to get along.” Donn may not hesitate to speak up if he disagrees with something, but that does not mean that he would not be able to work together with others involved in law enforcement or prosecution of a case. Donn is not a professional politician, and he has promised to limit himself to two terms.
