UPDATE: Cargill's Mom Gives Emotional Testimony

Updated Monday, May 21, 2012 at 3:16 p.m. CDT
Rachel Wilson, Kimberly Cargill's mom, gave emotional testimony this afternoon, crying as she related how her daughter told her that she hoped her cancer returned "and that I would die an old woman alone."

Ms. Wilson had been treated for cancer in 1998 and had flown Cargill and her two youngest boys up to Oregon for a visit in 1999. The two-month visit had not gone well, Ms. Wilson said.

The punishment phase of the capital murder trial of Kimberly Cargill began about an hour after it's scheduled time. Defense attorneys and the defendant met with Judge Jack Skeen Jr. in a hearing closed to prosecutors and the public.

In opening statements, prosecutor Matt Bingham said Cargill's older sons and former husbands would be testifying during the punishment phase of the trial about the violence they suffered as a result of Cargill's explosive temper.

The defendant's mother, Rachel Wilson, will also testify.
