Delta Waterfowl Awards Scholarship
The Smith County Chapter of Delta Waterfowl presented a $500 scholarship to Winona High School senior Sarah Thacker.

Miss Thacker plans to attend Texas A&M University in College Station and major in animal science. A 4.0-plus student, she was a member of the National Honor Society, FFA, Band where she was drum major, and orchestra. She also served as the school's mascot and participated in athletics.

Miss Thacker received the Lone Star FFA Degree, the highest degree of membership in the State FFA Association.

Her hobbies include hunting/fishing, spending time with family, youth group activities, playing golf, playing music with friends and numerous community service activities.

Delta Waterfowl is committed to strengthening North America's waterfowl hunting culture through its mentored hunting program and public-policy and advocacy work, according to its website. The vision is to secure the future of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting across North America, according to the website.

Delta Waterfowl's chapter and events system is unique in that local chapters can invest or direct the spending of 25 percent of event proceeds each year, according to a prepared statement about the scholarship.

This Waterfowl Heritage Fund provides local chapters a greater role in Delta's mission.

Eligible projects include men-tored youth hunts, youth water fowling training seminars, and local nesting structure programs, among others.

Chapters also can choose to direct the Waterfowl Heritage Fund funds to current Delta research or program activities, according to the statement.

With these funds, the Smith County Chapter has awarded an annual $500 scholarship to a local high school student each year, provided an annual youth hunter education course free of charge to more than 100 youth in the area, implemented a wood duck box program for area youth, and offered youth hunts in partnership with Delta's First Hunt Program, according to the statement.
