Hawkins Chamber Names Teacher Of The Year
The Hawkins Chamber of Commerce selected longtime teacher Janice M. Vonner as the 2012 Educator of the Year.
A Hawkins resident for 37 years, Mrs. Vonner taught third grade at Hawkins Elementary School for 34 years, according to a statement from her school. She also taught kindergarten in Athens ISD for three years.
Mrs. Vonner has been honored many times during her teaching career. Her awards include Hawkins Elementary School Teacher of the Year (twice); listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1992; Texas Teacher of the Year nominee for Region VII and Elementary Teacher of the Year 2002-03.
In addition, she served as an adjunct professor and supervisor for student teachers at Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins.
She also ser-ved as the Haw-kins ISD third-grade instructional team lea-der for 12 years and has par-ti-cipated with the campus site-ba-sed decision-ma-king committee.
Mrs. Vonner is married to Wiley Vonner, Winona ISD superintendent. They have three children, all of whom are educators in Mesquite ISD.
One of Mrs. Vonner's favorite sayings is, "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life."
She will retire at the end of this year with 37 years of teaching experience and she said she has thoroughly enjoyed it, according to the statement.
